How to use the abandoned cart trick to save money

What if I told you there was an effective, legal way to get money off items when you shop online? An effective way that doesn’t use discount websites or sign you up for millions of spam emails?

It’s called the abandoned cart trick and will work on a number of leading retailers, as well as smaller retailers across the world.

It’s a sneaky trick that can save you up to 50% on purchases if you use it right.

    The abandoned cart trick

There’s a common phenomenon in eCommerce called cart abandonment. This is where someone puts items in their shopping cart and leaves the website before completing purchase.

This causes lost profits for the retailer and there are products specifically designed to tackle them, like CartFlows and several others.

These tools provide ways for eCommerce stores to recover abandoned carts by emailing the customer.

Part of the established process is to send a reminder email, then offer a discount if the customer doesn’t return to complete the purchase.

It is this discount where you get to save money.

Not all retailers offer discounts, but some do.

There’s a forum over at MoneySavingExpert dedicated to listing retailers that offer discounts.

Some retailers that offer discounts include Asos, Boohoo, Book Depository, Boux Avenue, Currys, Dunelm, Euro Car Parts, H&M, Harvey Nichols, Monsoon, Moonpig, Mountain Warehouse, New Look, River Island, The Perfume Shop, Wayfair, WHSmith and many others.

How to grab a discount using an abandoned cart

The process is very simple but can be hit and miss. Even those retailers that frequently offer discounts don’t always, so it’s the luck of the draw.

    1. Sign up for an account at the retailer in question
    2. Go shopping and add your desired items to the cart
    3. Leave the website without removing those items
    4. Wait a while and monitor your inbox for follow up emails

Most abandoned cart tools suggest sending an initial reminder within the first few hours. Then sending another within 24-48 hours. Then a third and final email within 48-72 hours.

You’ll need to wait at least 24 hours until you begin seeing discount offers.

If you’re after something specific and want to see if you can save, this is a way to do it.

You’ll require willpower and patience but it’s a viable way to save anywhere between 10% and 50% off whatever you plan to buy.

All for playing the waiting game.
