Half-term is a time to spend with the kids but can also present challenges. Especially when money is tight and you don’t have the kind of entertainment budget you used to have.

With that in mind, here’s a quick list of 10 cheap or free things to do during half-term.

Wherever you live in the country, there should be something you can do here!

    1. Nature hike or picnic in the park: Spend some time outdoors by going on a nature hike or having a picnic in a local park. It’s an excellent way to connect with nature, breathe in fresh air, and relax. Pack some snacks and drinks, and don’t forget a blanket to sit on!
    2. Picnic at a lake or river: If there’s a lake or river nearby, pack a picnic and enjoy a serene afternoon by the water. Some locations may also offer swimming or fishing opportunities.
    3. Explore local museums and galleries: Many museums and galleries offer free entry or have discounted rates for students during the half-term. Take this opportunity to explore your local art and culture scene and learn something new.
    4. Volunteer for a community project: Giving back to the community can be rewarding and fulfilling. It’s also an important learning experience for teenagers and young adults. Look for local volunteering opportunities that align with your interests, such as helping at an animal shelter, cleaning up a park, or assisting at a food bank.
    5. Organize a movie marathon: Invite your friends over for a movie marathon at your place. Choose a theme or a favourite movie series, prepare some popcorn, and enjoy a day of entertainment without spending much.
    6. DIY outdoor cinema: Invite friends over for a movie night in your backyard or a local park. All you need is a projector (you can borrow one or buy an affordable one), a white sheet or a blank wall, and some blankets.
    7. Visit the local library: Libraries are often overlooked, but they offer a treasure trove of books, movies, and activities. Borrow some books you’ve been wanting to read or attend a workshop or event the library might be hosting.
    8. Host a game night: Invite friends over for a fun-filled game night. You can play board games, card games, or video games. It’s a great way to bond and have a blast without breaking the bank.
    9. DIY craft day: Get creative with a do-it-yourself (DIY) craft day. Use materials you already have at home to create art, crafts, or decorations. YouTube and online tutorials can be great sources of inspiration.
    10. Explore a new hobby: Half-term is an excellent opportunity to try something new. Explore a hobby you’ve been curious about, like painting, writing, photography, gardening, or playing a musical instrument.
    11. Visit a local farmer’s market: Check out your local farmer’s market to discover fresh produce, artisanal products, and unique treats. It’s an enjoyable way to support local businesses and find tasty, healthy snacks. You could then combine with a cooking challenge to see who can cook the best snack with what they buy.
    12. Stargazing night: if you live in an area with low light pollution, go stargazing on a clear night. Lay back and observe the wonders of the night sky or use a stargazing app to identify constellations and planets.
    13. Beach day: Pack a picnic, sunscreen, and beach towels, and head to the beach. Spend the day soaking up the sun, swimming in the ocean, building sandcastles, and playing beach games.
    14. Bike ride: If you have a bicycle, go on a bike ride through scenic routes, parks, or bike trails in your area. It’s a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
    15. City walking tour: Become a tourist in your own town or city by going on a self-guided walking tour. Discover hidden gems, historical landmarks, and interesting architecture.
    16. Community events: Keep an eye out for free community events, such as outdoor concerts, festivals, or markets. These events often offer entertainment, food stalls, and a chance to socialise.
    17. Nature reserve visit: Explore a nature reserve or wildlife sanctuary near you. Enjoy the beauty of nature, observe local wildlife, and take some photos.
    18. Geocaching adventure: Geocaching is a real-world treasure-hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. It’s an exciting and free activity that can lead you to unique places in your area.
    19. Visit a botanical garden: Some botanical gardens offer free or discounted entry, and they are perfect places to appreciate beautiful flowers and greenery.
    20. Local history hunt: Research the history of your town or city and create a scavenger hunt to find significant landmarks and historical sites.

Remember, half-term breaks are a great opportunity to unwind and explore new things without the pressures of school or work.

Take advantage of this time to relax, recharge, and make lasting memories with friends and family.
